We spoke with Collarts graduate Camryn Fitzgerald, who completed a Double Degree in Music Performance and Entertainment Management. Camryn has combined her passion for music and events, now working as a Media, Communications, and Events Coordinator while also releasing new tracks and performing at gigs!
Where do you currently work, and what does your role involve?
I am currently the Media, Communications & Events Coordinator for AFL Barwon. I also do paid music gigs on weekends.
What advice would you give to future Collarts students who are interested in studying the double degree?
I would say you may surprise yourself with the interests you develop during your course, so don’t rule out other areas of the entertainment industry for your “day job.” And yes, you can do it all—playing music outside of work hours is always an option, even if you end up in a more administrative role.
Completing the Music Performance bachelors degree first and then moving on to the Entertainment Management bachelors, I found the double degree opened up many opportunities I wouldn’t have had access to if I’d only studied Music.
I finished my course during the COVID lockdowns, when being a successful gigging musician was challenging. At the time, I was working as a waitress at a golf club, and after completing my Entertainment Management course, I asked management if there were any opportunities in marketing. They moved me into an Events and Digital Marketing role, where I began my journey in the sports industry while still writing and playing music in my spare time.
What opportunities (internships, volunteer work, jobs) did you have while studying at Collarts?
My major opportunity was an internship with Jayden Bath and Loch Hart Music Festival. I met with Jayden regularly and gained hands-on experience in organiszing the festival. A few years on, I’m still involved with the organiszing team at Loch Hart, helping manage the bar each year.
Other opportunities included a paid role with Live Nation in VIP and ticketing for U2 in Melbourne, as well as working on the events team in ticketing and security for the Moto GP at Phillip Island.
What is your favourite thing about your job, and what are you looking forward to?
I love being able to balance both my creative and business skills at work; it keeps things interesting day- to- day.
I’ve also really enjoyed learning about a new industry, as I always envisioned growing within the music space. I’ve found that my skills and education have transferred easily to sports, allowing me to bring an objective perspective.
I’m looking forward to exploring future opportunities and often wonder if I’ll eventually transition back into a music-related role.
