There's more than one way to make music
Write musical compositions and lyrics for songs, either on your own or with a team of co-writers. Perform your own songs or write for other artists.
Average industry salary*:
Perform songs or musical compositions in a studio setting for recording and release. You may work closely with a band, music producer, sound engineer, and songwriters.
Average industry salary*:
Teach students the art of instrumental techniques, scales, music theory, music history, and more, and help prepare them for exams, auditions, and live performances.
Average industry salary*:
From aspiring drummer to a full-time musician: our music performance alum’s story
"“Collarts did a really good job of linking the theory to the practice. So many parts of the course were so industry-based with lots of work experience opportunities and industry professionals explaining the ins and outs of the industry.”"
On-campus auditions typically occur fortnightly on Wednesdays from 1PM to 4PM.
Your pieces must be two contemporary contrasting pieces, such as a rock and jazz or pop and folk piece.
If you are interested in the singer/instrumentalist songwriter stream, you must perform 2 original pieces instead.
Vocals/songwriter auditions must have backing/accompaniment to assess the ability to pitch to a reference note/chord. We can’t accept a cappella submissions for vocalists.
Guitar student auditions must demonstrate harmonic accompaniment and some lead/melodic playing, beyond basic chord songs, due to the high demands of the guitar program and instrumental workshops.
When you audition, you will complete a music theory evaluation for us. You don’t need to have strong music theory knowledge to gain acceptance; however, basic level knowledge is required. Based on your evaluation, we will best support you in our theory stream.
We also offer music theory boot camps and weekly music theory tutoring for those who struggle or want extra assistance.
Unfortunately, we don’t offer classic or musical theatre studies. We focus on contemporary music covering everything from pop, rock, blues, RnB, soul, funk, and more.
If you are an instrumentalist, you’ll need to have your own instrument to play, although we do have instruments available to use at Collarts. We also recommend purchasing a USB Microphone or Condenser Microphone.
As a Collarts student, you can access special discounts at Manny's to help you with this.
Yes! We offer collaboration opportunities in the course, and there are lots of ways to collaborate outside of class too.
Have your original work recorded, mixed, and mastered by Music Production and Audio Engineering students who are honing their skills.
Producers often create instrumental electronic music which can feature vocalists from Music Performance students.
Audio Engineers study live sound, making them ideal sound technicians for gigs.
Bachelor students will complete a free choice of Group Project, where they can use relationships formed during the course (especially within the Industry Awareness units common to Music Performance, Production, Entertainment Management, and Audio).
Your Music Performance course can’t wait. Neither can you.
